Istiklal Road Taksim Square to Galatasaray High School
This traffic free street is one of the top things to do whilst in Istanbul and whenever you visit or whatever time of year it is always heaving with people who are shopping, sitting in cafés and bars, or just strolling along. The street was once called Grande Rue de Pera or Cadde-i Kebir and in the 19th century was very significant having most of the fashionable shops and embassies.
The street runs all the way from Taksim Square’s northern end to the southernend of Tunel Square and halfway Yeni Carsi Road or Caddesi divides it next to the Galatasaray Lisesi (High School). The streets chicest part used to be at the north-easterly end but today you will find it to be on the south-west all the way to Tunel Square. The street is lined with restaurants, cinemas, bars, bookshops, clothing shops and a great place for promenading and there is a 19th century tram that will take you along this pedestrian street to the terminus at the Tünel end which will stop three times before reaching there.
