The name is possibly a corruption of the Greek name Sosthenion (Thanksgiving) and comes from a reference in the story of Jason and the Argonauts that tells of the Argonauts stopping here to erect a statue in thanks to the hero Polydeuces who help them defeat Amycus, the son of Poseidon and king of the Bebryces. Amycus would challenge everyone to box with him and would wear nail-studded gloves which normally killed his opponent but with Polydeuces he more than met his match. The large and attractive bay here was used as a dry dock for many years and is why the nearby bus stop is labelled Tersane (Shipyard), and today is once more full of pleasure boats.
Deli (Crazy) Fuad Pasa Yalı or MansionThis was the home of Fuad Paşa (1835-1931) who fearlessly fought in the Russo-Turkish War and was infamous for his plain speaking which is how he came by his nickname. He conspired against Sultan Abdülhamid II and was forced into exile in Damascus. Today the building houses the offices of Turkey’s delegation to the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organisation (BSEC).
Istinye HamamThis hamam sits opposite the Hanım Sultan Mosque and is one of the few along the Bosphorus that date just before the 1453 conquest of Constantinople. The women’s section here was closed long ago but it opens for men every day.
Getting to Istinye and YenikoyThere is a ferry service to Istinye, and the ferry to Yenikoy is less frequent, also the long Bosphorus cruises stop at Yeniköy. You can pick up the regular buses along the coast road from Kabatas and Besiktas and the Bus No. 40B runs from Besiktas to Istinye Park.
