Kalender is thought to have been named after a dervish lodge that once stood here, although it is more likely that it took its name from the 17th century summer palace that was built by Kalender Cavas and who was the caretaker of the Sultanahmet Mosque ( Blue Mosque ) .
It was replaced by the Kalender Garden Palace in the 18th century which was the work of Damat Ibrahim Pasa and Grand Vizier to Sultan Ahmed III. The palace was restored in the 19th century but little remains there now with the exception of the garden walls.

As you move along the Bosphorus you will notice how much greener it becomes. Stop to take in and admire the huge Huber Yali in Kalender and just around the bend from here is the large beautiful bay of Tarabya .
