Kalenderhane Mosque Istanbul

Kalenderhane Mosque Istanbul
In a pretty part of the Suleymaniye neighbourhood and near the old aqueduct the Kalenderhane Mosque was once the large 12th century Byzantine Church of Theotokas- Kyriotissa and renamed by Kalender dervishes who used the building as a lodge (tekke) after the Ottoman conquest.

Artefacts of Kalenderhane Church

The church once had a series of frescoes depicting St. Francis of Assisi,
which are said to be the oldest paintings of the Saint to have been discovered and are now in the Istanbul Archaeology Museum although not on display.  There was also a mosaic believed to date from the 7th century showing the presentation of Christ in the Temple and is the only pre-Iconoclastic mosaic to have ever been found, furthermore excavations next to the church revealed remains of two previous churches and a 4th-5th century bathhouse.

Location

Kalenderhane Mosque is located in Kalenderhane district of Fatih .
