Karakoy Square Istanbul

Karakoy Square Istanbul
The Karakoy tram stops at the square which is north of Galata Bridge . This was once the centre of Genoese Galata, which was a trading colony that was walled and virtually independent, and flourished during Byzantine times.

In its heyday it stretched from Azapkapi , where the Ataturk Bridge now stands, to Tophane and uphill as far as the Galata Tower .

Karakoy Palas

From the tram platform you can see the Karaköy Palas building that was designed in 1920 by Guilio Mongeri, an Italian architect. It was built with a mixture of Byzantine , Seljuk and Ottoman features and now houses branches of the Halkbank and Yapi Kredi banks.

Nordstern Han

Opposite, across the tramlines, is the Nordstern Han that was also designed by an Italian architect.
