Kilic Ali Pasa Mosque Istanbul

Kilic Ali Pasa Mosque Istanbul
This mosque is directly opposite the Tophane tram stop and was built for Vice Admiral Kilic Ali Pasa by Mimar Sinan in 1560.

Ali, who was Italian, had been captured by pirates
and joined them as they pillaged the mediterranean and eventually signed up for the navy serving under Turgut Reis and went on to become the Governor General in Tripoli, Libya. After the disastrous Lepanto defeat off the coat of Greece in 1571, where he was the only commander to escape with his fleet of ships, was promoted to a vice admiral and developed the Royal Shipyard so that larger vessels could be constructed there.

The mosque is modelled on Aya Sofya ( Hagia Sophia ) and Sinan was in his nineties when he designed it.

Today the whole complex survives and underwent complete restoration work in 2010.
