Kont Szchenyi Fire Brigade Museum
Sultan Abdulaziz brought Hungarian Count Odön Szechenyi (1839-1922) to Istanbul to establish a proper fire brigade after a devastating fire in 1871 and in 1880 as a reward for his work made him a Paşa. This was the first time in Ottoman history that a non-Muslim was bestowed with this title. The museum named after him has exhibits from over a 200 year period including items that extinguished fires, and a collection of uniforms worn by the first proper fire fighters, the ‘tulumbacı’. Szechenyi’s grave can be found in a Catholic cemetery in Ferikoy .
