Kucuksu or Goksu Palace

Kucuksu or Goksu Palace
This tiny summer palace in Istanbul was used for short stays on the countryside sojourns and hunting trips taken by Ottoman sultans and is located in the Kucuksu district of Beykoz on the city’s Asian shore of the Bosphorus , in between Anadoluhisari and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.

Commissioned by Sultan Abdulmecid I and designed in a neo-baroque style by father and son architects Garabet and Nigogayos Balyan, it was completed in 1857.  The new palace replaced a 2-storey timber structure that had been erected by Grand Vizier Divittar Mehmed.  The building has two main floors and basement on an area of 15 x 27m.
The garden is surrounded by cast iron railings, unlike the high garden walls of other palace gardens, and has an entrance gate on all four sides. The basement contained the kitchen and servant’s quarters and the upper floors have a central hall and four corner rooms with colourful Italian marble fireplaces. The rooms are richly decorated and furnished and have crystal chandeliers and Hereke carpets and the halls and rooms exhibit paintings and many objects of art. In the early part of the Republican Period it was used as a state guesthouse and was completely restored in 1944 when it opened as a public museum.

Kucuksu Palace has made appearances in both Hollywood and Bollywood movies.
