Kuleli Military School or Kuleli Askeri Lisesi Istanbul

Kuleli Military School or Kuleli Askeri Lisesi Istanbul
After Sultan Mahmud II disbanded the Janissaries in 1826 he established a regular army to replace them and built a wooden barracks for his soldiers on the Bosphorus shoreline. After these barracks were destroyed by fire, Sultan Abdulmecid commissioned the architect Garabet Balyan to build the new barracks from stone and which became known as the Tower Barracks. Due to damage from yet another fire the barracks were rebuilt by Sultan Abdulaziz who added a second storey to the structure.

The barracks became a military hospital during the Crimean War of 1855-1856 which was supervised by the famous Florence Nightingale and over the years has been utilised as a school, military school and an orphanage. One of its most prominent students was Irfan Orga, the author of the famous and moving book “A Portrait of a Turkish Family”.
The land on which the school sits is believed to have been the location of the convent “Metanoia (Repentance)” that was founded by Theodora, the wife of Emperor Justinian, as a home for prostitutes who had been forced to reform, a tale happily related by Procopius (500-565) the Byzantine historian who claimed Theodora herself started out as one of the worst kind of whores.

Location

Kuleli Military School is located in the Kuleli district of Uskudar .
