Three kilometers from Uskudar by bus or dolmus ( or take a ferry from Besiktas ) Kuzguncuk is surrounded by nature preserves, cemeteries and has streets lined with antique wooden houses. The Jewish Cemetery is a 30 minute walk from the village and has marble gravestones flat on the ground rather than standing erect.
The Jewish CommunityThe Jewish community of Istanbul originates from when Beyazit II gave asylum to the refugees escaping the Spanish Inquisition in 1492 and some still speak “Ladino” a classical Spanish language from the 15th century. The Jewish community played a large part in the Turkish economy during Ottoman times using their renowned business acumen and are still an important part of it today.
