Legend of Symplegades or Clashing Rocks

Legend of Symplegades or Clashing Rocks
It is not surprising that the passage from the Bosphorus to the Black Sea has attracted a very colourful legend to it. It was believed in ancient times that the two huge rocks guarding the strait “the Symplegades or Clashing Rocks” would move toward each other and clash making a noise sounding like thunder thus preventing ships from passing.
The famous sailor Jason, whilst on route to find the Golden Fleece, stopped off here to help the local king Phineus, who was blind and plagued by monsters that would constantly attack him and eat all his food. Jason and his Argonauts rid him of the monsters and in return Phineus told Jason how to trick his way through the Symplegades by sending a pigeon ahead of the ship and if it managed to pass through safely then so would their ship. When Jason followed this advice the rocks only clipped the tail of the pigeon and the ship, being urged on by the playing of Orpheus’s famous lyre, only received minor damage to its stern.

Clashing Rocks are located in Beykoz Istanbul .
