Mahmud Pasa Mosque Istanbul

Mahmud Pasa Mosque Istanbul

Location

The mosque, one of Istanbul’s oldest, can be found just outside of the Grand Bazaar in Beyazit Fatih.

History

Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror built this one in 1462 for his Grand Vizier Mahmud Paşa who was regarded as the wisest man ever to have held this position, although this didn’t prevent his death whilst being imprisoned in Yedikule .

The mosque has a colonnaded portico leading to a narthex and then onto a rectangular hall with two sections each with their own dome and the rooms here were provided for travelling dervishes. Mahmud Paşa’s octagonal tomb at the back of the mosque is covered in blue and turquoise Iznik tiles giving it a distinct look of Central Asia.

Visiting Mahmud Pasa Mosque

Unfortunately the tomb is not open to the public and you have to look through a fence to see it.
