Markiz Pastanesi Cake Shop Istanbul

Markiz Pastanesi Cake Shop Istanbul
You will find this lovely cake shop on the right side of the Istiklal Road that was established in 1940 and built on the site of another popular patisserie called the Lebon. The original shops creator was Edouard Lebon, who was the brother-in-law of architect Alexandre Vallaury, and Lebon commissioned J. A. Arnoux in France to make the beautiful Mucha-style tile depictions of the four seasons to decorate the walls. Unfortunately during the shipment from Istanbul some panels were destroyed with only two of spring and one autumn panel surviving.

The Lebon was once a very popular meeting place and boasted visitors such as the writer Namik Kemal (1840-1888) and the poet Ziya Pasa (1829-1880). Markiz Avedis Ohanyan took over the Lebon and supplied the Art Deco stained glass windows, an unusual sight in Istanbul. He closed the shop in 1977 and it remained abandoned from then until it was restored and reopened in 2003. Although its name often changes it has managed to live on because of its beautiful inner décor.
