Merter was first formed in 1960s. At the time, the area only had vineyards and fields, and the centre of the town was Veysel Karani Mosque.
Nowadays, Merter is the centre of textile production in Istanbul. The area has very good transportation links (including metrobus and metro) and it is known as one of the cheapest sections of Istanbul to buy or rent a property.
