Mevlevikapi or Mevlevi Gate Istanbul

Mevlevikapi or Mevlevi Gate Istanbul
The gate was named after a nearby dervish tekke lodge, the Yenikapi Mevlevihanesi that was established in 1598 by the Janissary leader Malkoç Mehmed Efendi.  This lodge was the second oldest Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul after the Galata Mevlevihanesi and is by far the largest.  After a suspicious fire in 1906 it wasn’t until 1911 that the lodge underwent repairs and in 1925 after Ataturk banned dervish orders the buildings were converted into a student hostel that in 1961, after another fire, more of it was destroyed.  Unbelievably in 1997 there was yet another fire which destroyed most of what was left.

In 2009 the whole complex was rebuilt as part of a project called “Cultural Valley” that set out to improve the whole area.  The restoration of the complex is stunning especially the new ritual hall (semahane) with its wooden floor laid beneath a shallow dome.  If you walk through the Merkez Efendi cemetery heading towards the Merkez Efendi Mosque you will find the gate behind a row of restaurants, and you can see the whirling dervishes dance here every Sunday at 14:00.
