Mihrimah Sultan Mosque Istanbul
Mihrimah Sultan MosqueThis striking mosque sits on the very top of Istanbul’s Sixth Hill in Edirnekapi Fatih , towering over the landscape, and can be seen from many kilometres away. It was built between 1562 and 1565 by Mimar Sinan for Mihrimah Sultan who was the favourite daughter of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent .
The mosque complex contained a seminary, primary school and hamam although it was extensively damaged during earthquakes in 1766 and 1894 has undergone complete restoration in 2009 and today, there is a double hamam open to the public. Mihrimah Sultan also commissioned the Harbor Mosque in Uskudar .
Mihrimah Sultan HamamWe recommend a visit to the historic Mihrimah Sultan Hamam ; it is very reasonably priced, has separate sections for men and women and recently installed a plunge pool and sauna.
