Millet or People's Library Istanbul

Millet or People's Library Istanbul
The Library is on Fevzi Pasa Road opposite Fatih Mosque and was established by Ali Emiri Efendi (1857-1924) who was a traveller and bibliophile born in Diyarbakir .  It is housed in what was the Feyzullah Efendi Medresesi that dates back to 1700 and underwent full restoration in 2008.

There is a well and fountain in the pretty courtyard garden with steps leading up to the medrese that has two domed lecture rooms.  The library has a collection of 7,000 manuscripts and over 20,000 books, many of which are rare or first editions along with its 11th century showpiece from Baghdad,
the Divan-ı-Lügati’t Türk, which is the earliest known dictionary and was written by hand.  It also has the book written by Kashgar Mahmud that helped form an understanding of Turkic history.  Entry into the library is free and they will ask you to leave any bags you have at the door.
