The caiques were usually kitted out with 13 pairs of oars which would either go up or down in number according to the importance of those boarding.
Boats of Sultan and HaremThe best boats were reserved for the imperial family and transported sultans’ every Friday to prayers. The caiques used by the sultans’ would display their coat of arms and decorative weaponry and those used by the Harem women displayed flowers and fruit; many of them had an eagle carved at the bow end similar to a ship’s figurehead.
The oldest and largest in the imperial caique collection dates from the 17th century and required 24 pairs of oars, and most of the others date back to the 19th century.
Ataturk RoomIn the Ataturk Room on the ground floor, you will find the preserved first Turkish president’s cabin from the state yacht “Ertugrul”.
Byzantine EraUpstairs there is a piece of chain that was used during Byzantine times to close off the Golden Horn from the Bosphorus along with many paintings illustrating all the different vessels that sailed the strait.
Uniforms of Turkish NavyAnother room has uniforms worn by the Turkish navy over the centuries, and on the landing there is a glass case which has the green ensign taken from the tomb of Barbados Hayreddin that was outside in the square.
