Location

The Neve Shalom or Salom Synagogue ( Oasis of Peace or Valley of Peace ) is located on Buyuk Hendek Street in the district of Galata Kuledibi.

Building the Neve Shalom Synagogue

Marsel Franko, a Jewish community leader, renovated the gym of this “First Co-educational Jewish School” to be used as a synagogue and it opened during Rosh Hashanah
(Jewish New Year) on September 26, 1938. The synagogue was built in response to an increase in the Jewish population and in 1949, after all necessary building permissions had been granted, the primary school was demolished and the new synagogue built on its ruins and was completed in 1951. The architects were two young Turkish Jews, Elyo Ventura and Bernar Motola, graduates of Istanbul’s Technical University; the synagogue opened for religious services on March 25, 1951.

The Design

The domed ceiling structure of the synagogue was constructed by using the architectural calculations of Badin, a famous architect, and was designed by Garbis Usta, a famous papier-mâché master. The stained glass windows were drawn at the State Fine Arts Academy in Istanbul and the special glass used in the sanctuary imported from England. The marble floor covering is made of onyx.

Opening Hours

Neve Shalom is the central and largest Sephardic synagogue in Istanbul and opens for services especially on Shabbats, High Holidays, Bar Mitzvahs, funerals and weddings.
