Nisantasi Istanbul

Nisantasi Istanbul

Things to do in Nisantasi

The very upmarket suburb of Nisantasi is where you will see the upper class of Istanbul society do their shopping and this area stretches far out east to Democracy Park .
This was once a forest where the sultans came to practice their archery and it was their 19th century successors that decided to redevelop the area as it was so close to Pera. These plans gradually also swallowed up neighbouring Tesvikiye and Macka , and although it mainly attracts shoppers there are some historical monuments to be seen here.
You will find some excellent 19th century architecture that include a number of impressive apartment blocks which can be difficult to fully take in due to the number of people shopping and blocking the pavements.

Main Streets of Nisantasi

Nisantasi is divided by Valikonagi Road and the main shopping streets, Rumeli, Tesvikiye and Abdi Ipekci Road’s, run on either side.

Obelisks of Nisantasi

Nişantasi means “target stone” in Turkish and refers to the obelisks that were once placed in the woodlands to mark the furthest points the sultans’ arrows would reach and several of them have survived today; you will find one at the junction of where Valikonagi and Tesvikiye Road’s meet, a few more in the grounds of the Tesvikiye Mosque and a little further on there is one in front of the Harbiye Police Station.
