On the Defterdarburnu promontory next to Bosphorus Bridge stands this beautiful baroque style mosque that fills with light through is many windows. It was built for Sultan Abdulmecit on the site of a previous 18th century mosque and designed by Nikogos Balyan in 1854-1855; he also designed the Dolmabahce Mosque and both have many similarities.

The two-storey pew attached at the back was designed to enable the sultan to enter the mosque direct from his boat (caique) rather than walking to the main entrance at the front. There are painted clouds inside the dome that appear to float between the columns that add a hint of fantasy to the building.
