Pangalti Istanbul

Pangalti Istanbul

Location

Pangalti is located in the Nisantasi area of Sisli in Istanbul and is one of four neighbourhoods together with Tesvikiye , Macka and Osmanbey .

History

Pangalti was once populated with mainly Levantine Christians, and from 1848 the headquarters of the Ottoman Army War College, established by Sultan Mahmud II, was based here.  When Istanbul underwent major redevelopment in the 1860s the Christian cemeteries in Taksim were relocated to Sisli, and in 1864 in the avenue between Taksim and Pangalti a garden park known as Taksim Gezisi was built to replace them.

Places to Visit in Pangalti

Pangalti is home to the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and the Pangalti Catholic Cemetery, the largest Catholic cemetery in Istanbul

Armenian Catholic Church

The Armenian Catholic Church, Anarad Higutyun (Immaculate Conception), was constructed in 1866 using wood and during the early 70s was rebuilt using stone.

Mihitaryan Armenian School Pangalti

In 1811 the Private Armenian School of Pangalti (the former Mihitaryan Ermeni Mektebi or Mihitaryan School) was founded in Kandilli and was associated with the school of the Armenian Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, established in Istanbul in 1847, and is still in existence today.
