Pera Museum Istanbul
The Pera Museum (Tel. 0212 334 9900, www.peramuzesi.org.tr; closed Monday) The impressive 19th century mansion that houses this museum can be found on Mesrutiyet Road (Caddesi) and is almost next door to the Büyük Londra Oteli ( Grand Hotel de Londres ). The museum has some of the private collections of the Suna and Inan Kırac Foundation who also donated the building, and has temporary exhibition space over three of its floors for local and international displays.
The museum is one of the main attractions in up and coming Tepebasi , which means “Hilltop” in Turkish, has wonderful views of the Golden Horn and is easily accessible from Istiklal Road (Caddesi). There are many other paintings by foreign artists, one of which is the Italian Fausto Zonaro, who was a court artist to Ottoman sultans’ from 1896 to 1909, and Amadeo Preziosi who was Maltese and lived in Istanbul from 1842 to 1882. The earlier paintings of Istanbul’s scenery are quite simplistic and many of the buildings they feature no longer exist, and as the time passes the depictions of daily life become much more illustrated. There is a series of very interesting paintings that depict interiors painted in the early 18th century by Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, a French artist, and a portrayal of the waterside mansion at Sadabad, the Said Pasa Yali, painted by Migirdic Civanyan, and was one of Istanbul’s architectural treasures.

Exhibits at the Pera MuseumIt is best to view the museum by working your way down from the fourth floor where there is an exhibition entitled “Istanbul: The City of Dreams” and shows images of daily life in Istanbul during the Ottoman Empire from the 17th to the 20th century.
