Pera Palas ( Palace ) Jumeirah Hotel Istanbul

Pera Palas ( Palace ) Jumeirah Hotel Istanbul

Built for Orient Express Passengers

The lovely hotel was built in 1895 for the founder of the Compagnie Internationale de Wagons-Lits, Georges Nackelmackers, by French Levantine architect Alexandre Vallaury.  It was originally built for the passengers of the Orient Express arriving from Europe and boasted of having “a thoroughly healthy situation, being high up and isolated on all sides”.

Famous Guests of Pera Palas Hotel

Aside from the Turkish Republic’s first president Ataturk and Agatha Christie as famous guests, there was also Greta Garbo, President Tito of Yugoslavia, King Edward VIII of Britain and the spy Mata Hari.

The View

The wide open space next to the hotel has excellent views across the Golden Horn and the 19th century Theatre de Petit Champs once stood there. The steel and glass monstrosity that is next to it is the headquarters of the TRT television network and has been described as “a tragedy for Istanbul” and although plans have been made to replace it with a Frank Gehry-designed extension of the Pera Museum these have been halted.

Places to Visit Closeby

Buyuk Londra Hotel

Opposite is the Buyuk Londra Hotel, a design of the Italian architect Guglielmo Semprini, and when it opened in 1892 it boasted of up to date technology that included an elevator and bath tubs, and one of its famous guests was Ernest Hemmingway.

British Consulate - Pera House

The British Consulate (Pera House) was originally built in 1801 and after a fire in 1844 was rebuilt by William James Smith and Charles Barry who were the architects on the House of Commons building in London, England and the design is a copy of the Reform Club in Pall Mall.
