Piyale Pasa Mosque Istanbul

Piyale Pasa Mosque Istanbul
Just a short distance inland from Kasimpasa is the Piyale Pasa Mosque designed by Mimar Sinan and built in 1573.  The mosque style is reminiscent of his very early designs and has multiple equal size domes, similar to the Ulu Mosque in Bursa, and has a minaret rising from its centre on the western façade, which is unlike other mosques in Istanbul .  There are beautiful Iznik tiles inside and a frieze designed by the famous calligrapher Karahisari.  Piyale Paşa was originally a Croatian shoemaker who became a Lord High Admiral; he captured Chios for the Ottomans and married a daughter of Sultan Selim II.
