Rumeli Feneri or European Lighthouse Istanbul

Rumeli Feneri means European Lighthouse and there has been one here since the 16th century. Just off the shoreline there are a pair of rocks; Kocatas (Great Stone) and Kortas (Blind Stone) and were called the “Kanli Kayalar (Bloody Rocks)” because of the danger they caused to shipping. These were known as the Symplegades to the Ancient Greeks as this was where Jason and the Argonauts sailed between en-route to finding the Golden Fleece.

Today’s lighthouse measures 30m tall, was built in 1769 and modernised by the British in 1856 during the Crimean War. It is a one of a matching pair, the other is opposite across the Bosphorus at Anadolu Feneri .

There are the remains of a twin towered castle out on the headland that was built in 1769 that give excellent views of the Black Sea and the Symplegades through its arched exterior wall.
