Rustempasa Medrese Istanbul
LocationHead downhill from the Cagaloglu Hamam and along Hoca Hanı Street in Fatih to get to Rüstempaşa Medrese.
Design and Building the MedreseThis was designed and built by the famous architect Mimar Sinan in 1550 by order of the Grand Vizier Rüstem Paşa. Inside was an open courtyard enclosed by cells and surrounded by porticoes with an ablution fountain at its centre; this was Sinan’s only example of an octagonal formation for a medrese and has an attractive gateway on the outside.
Use of Rustempasa Medrese TodayThe building has been restored and is now a cultural centre but unfortunately rarely opened for public viewing.
