Sebsafa Kadin or Zeyrek Mosque

Sebsafa Kadin or Zeyrek Mosque
In the Küçükpazarı area near Atatürk Boulevard this charming mosque has a school attached to it that was built in memory of Şehzade Mehmed the son of Fatma Şebsafa Kadı, who was a member of Abdülhamid I’s Harem and who commissioned the construction in 1787.  It is also known as Zeyrek Mosque which should not be confused with the older Zeyrek Kilise Mosque / Monastery on the Pantokrator.  Close by on the concrete walls of the IMÇ blocks there is a long decorative mosaic, the work of poet and artist Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu that he made in 1965, and although made as an abstract it is obvious to see Istanbul shaped as a winding river along with its minarets, towers and domes, and with birds and fish.
