Seraglio Point or Sarayburnu Istanbul

Seraglio Point or Sarayburnu Istanbul
Directly across Gulhane Park from the Soguk Cesme (Cold Fountain) Gate the exit here faces Seraglio Point (Sarayburnu) which gives fantastic views across the Sea of Marmara.

The first ever statue of Ataturk, and the first ever statue of a Turk to be erected in Turkey, was placed here in 1926 and was designed by the Austrian sculptor Heinrinck Krippel, and shows Ataturk looking across to Kadikoy and Haydarpasa . It was from here that Ataturk sailed for Samsun in 1919 at the start of the Turkish War of Independence.

Places to Visit in Sarayburnu

Basketmakers' Pavilion or Sepetciler Kasri

Not far from here heading towards Sirkeci is the elegant Basketmakers’ Pavilion (Sepetçiler Kasrı), a boathouse with rooms from where sultans’ would board cruises across the Bosphorus or along the Golden Horn . There has been a building on this site since the 5th century and today’s version was built in 1643 for Sultan Ibrahim the Mad. It was left derelict for most of the 20th century and had restoration work carried out in 1980 and 1990 and is best viewed from the sea as you sail towards Kadikoy .
