Small Hagia Sophia or Small Aya Sofya Mosque
The small mosque of Aya Sofya was built as a church between 527 and 536 to service the palace of Hormisdas and possibly predates its namesake. Originally named after Sergius and Bacchus, two Roman soldiers, martyred for their faith and later became the patron saints of Christians in the Roman Army. It was renamed because of its resemblance to Hagia Sophia and converted into a mosque early in the 16th century during the reign of Beyazit II.


The original gold leaf and marble facing are gone but running around the architrave under the gallery is a frieze honouring Justinian, Theodor and St. Sergius.  

Opening Hours

The mosque is only open during prayer times.
