Sokollu Mehmet Pasa Mosque Istanbul

Sokollu Mehmet Pasa Mosque Istanbul
Sokollu Mehmet Pasa, the last Grand Vizier of Suleyman the Magnificent commissioned the mosque to be built in 1571 by Mimar Sinan . It was Sokollu Mehmet’s military expertise that saved the Ottoman Empire from the depraved rule of Selim the Sot and he was assassinated by Nur Banu, mother to Murat III, who was jealous of his power.

Inside the courtyard, surrounded on three sides by the rooms of the medrese (now used as a school for boys learning the Koran) is an attractive domed fountain and the interior, along with its very high dome, has an impressive display of Iznik tiles , a unique conical capped mimber, with tiling that is unique in Istanbul and inscriptions in calligraphy set against a huge mass of carnations and tulips. There is original extremely delicate paintwork in the northwest gallery over the entrance and embedded in the wall are pieces of the Kaaba from Mecca.

Location

The mosque, which is located in Small Ayasofya district of Fatih Istanbul .

Opening Hours
