St. Anthony Cathedral Taksim
The Cathedral was built between 1906 and 1911 and was designed by Giulio Mongeri (1875-1953) the Italian architect who was also responsible for the plinth of the monument in Taksim Square . There was an earlier church on the site that dated back to 1763 but was demolished to make way for the tram. The cathedral is usually called St. Antoine’s and sits in a small courtyard on the site of an old theatre and stands back off of Istiklal Road (Caddesi).



The buildings that surround the church, and the arch that is used to approach it, are all part of the same design built in red brickwork that make it stand out from the stone structures that are mostly found on the street. The neo-Gothic tall and spacious interior design is purely French although its exterior could come from Italy and the apartments that face the courtyard there have Romeo and Juliet balconies.
