Sulukule Istanbul

Sulukule Istanbul
The Sulukule was given its name because of the Lycus River that once flowed nearby. In 2008 an announcement was made that the whole area between Topkapi and Edirnekapi was to be demolished and rebuilt and the existing Roma population that lived there were to be re-housed elsewhere.  Although there was an outcry that this oldest settled community of Roma’s, whose origins could be traced back to Sultan Mehmed II, should remain, supporters of the new scheme replied the area had become an inner city slum and an eyesore. The Roma’s lost their fight to remain in 1992 and all the old music and belly dancing establishments had to close down, the residents moved elsewhere and many of the buildings have since been torn down.
Redevelopment of the area is still planned which hopefully building works will soon begin.
