Tarabya Istanbul

Tarabya Istanbul
This area is where many of the European embassies once held their summer establishments enabling their staff to get away from the stifling heat of the city, and with the many restaurants that remain here today it would appear that people are still doing the very same thing today.

Where the name drives from

Tarabya is much larger than Kalender and rather more impressive. Its name appears to be a corruption
of Therapeia (Therapy) a Byzantine name which was given because of the healing properties from the hot thermal springs that were found here and were destroyed in an earthquake in the 14th century. There are some that believe the name was given in the 5th century by Patriarch Attikos because the area had such a healthy atmosphere, whilst others insist it came from Sultan Selim II who bestowed the name after relishing a fish supper from here and had his Grand Vizier, Sokullu Mehmed Paşa, build him a palace which he called “Tarabiye (Pleasure)”.

Greek Orthodox Churches

There are two Greek Orthodox churches in Tarabya, one is at the entrance of Sumer Woods, and dedicated to Hagia Paraskeve, the other is dedicated to Hagios Konstantinos, and both serve as a reminder to the large Greek Orthodox population that used to live here.

The Grand Tarabya Hotel

The recently restored Grand Tarabya Hotel towers over Tarabya bay and is built on the site of a summer retreat that was coupled with the historic Tokatliyan Hotel in Pera that was unfortunately destroyed by a fire in 1954.
