Tarlabasi Istanbul

Tarlabasi Istanbul
The north side of Tarlabasi has similar mansions that you will find on Istiklal Road (Caddesi) and Cihangir although they are somewhat smaller. Many people working for wealthier families, and at the embassies in Istanbul in the 19th century, lived in this area as it was convenient for work. The embassies all moved to Ankara when the country’s capital was changed in 1923 and many of the residents here lost their jobs. In 1942 a high wealth tax was charged on minorities which forced other residents to leave and migrants from Eastern Turkey moved into what were single family homes turning them into apartment blocks.

When Tarlabasi Boulevard (Bulvari) was widened in the 1980s hundreds of historic houses were lost and those that survive today are in a very bad state even though the area has been undergoing restoration since 2005. Many artists and media people have been moving into the “new” Tarlabaşı but you will still see washing hanging everywhere, many street urchins and when the sun goes down, the transvestites, prostitutes and drug dealers come out.

It is recommended that if you want to walk around this area then do so in the day time and have company with you. The best day to visit is market day on a Sunday when Kurdele Street and Serdar Omer Pasa Street become jam packed with shoppers.
