The City Walls Istanbul

The City Walls Istanbul
The city walls built for Theodosius II are among the most interesting in all of Turkey. 6.5km long with parts still well preserved though portions collapsed in the 1999 earthquake. The wall is very slowly undergoing restoration some of which has been completely rebuilt by using newly dressed stone and cement bricks although these materials would not have existed at the time of its construction in 413.

In 447 another earthquake all but destroyed the walls and they had to be hastily rebuilt as Atilla the Hun forces were readying to attack the city and all able bodied citizens regardless of stature had to help in the reconstruction and managed to complete the project in just 2 months.

The original 5m x 12m wall had an outer wall of 2m x 8.5m and a 20m wide moat and was enough to repel Atilla’s attack.

Walking on City Walls

To walk along the walls takes around 2 hours but a full day is recommended to visit other nearby sites. Most of the outer wall and 96 towers still stand although access can be restricted on some restored sections. Along the walls are some rather run down slum houses and night time could be dangerous around these areas but you are unlikely to encounter any problems during the day.

Closeby Sites to Visit

The three best sites to visit are the Yedikule fortifications; Kariye Museum , a Byzantine church housing some of the best preserved mosaics and frescoes in the world, and the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque , another mosque built by Mimar Sinan .
