Tombs around Eyup Sultan Mosque

Tombs around Eyup Sultan Mosque

The Tomb of Ebu Eyup el-Ensari

This very holy shrine and place of pilgrimage is always busy with people praying. The tomb is accessible through a small door in an interior courtyard that is adorned with tiles and Eyup’s remains are behind a solid silver grille that was a gift from Selim III.

The Tomb of Sokollu Mehmed Pasa

There are many large tombs around the Eyup Sultan Mosque which include Sokollu Mehmed Pasa, designed by Mimar Sinan in 1572 for the powerful Grand Vizier that has superb stained glass windows.

The Tomb of Siyavus Pasa

The tomb of Siyavuş Paşa, another of Sinan’s designs, is thought to have been built for Siyavuş’s young children but was appropriated for the body of his father, Mirimirman Mehmed Paşa, who also has a stone wishing well in the courtyard.

The Tomb of Ayas Mehmed Pasa

At the back of the mosque along Beybaba Street there is another Sinan designed tomb belonging to Ayas Mehmed Pasa who was an infamous womaniser and whose name has been given to an area just off Taksim Square.

Other Tombs

Also the tombs of the vicious conqueror of Cyprus, Lala Mustafa Paşa (1500-1580) and the Empire styled tomb of Posta Telgraf Nazırı Izzet Efendi who died in 1891.  Worthy of note and close by is the tomb of Sultan Mehmed V Reşat (1900-1918) who was the last sultan to die and be buried in Turkey and is next to a school designed in the First National Architecture style by the famous Kemaleddin Bey.

Opening Hours

All the tombs are open for viewing except on Mondays.
