Topkapi Palace Museum Library

Topkapi Palace Museum Library
During the transformation of Topkapi Palace into a museum in 1924, the library was set up in the Agalar Mosque, located in the Palace’s third courtyard and was established in 1928.  Books were gathered from different parts of the Palace such as Emanet Hazinesi (Treasury of Trusts), Hazine (Treasury), Revan Kosku (Mansion), Bagdat Kosku (Mansion), Hirka-i Saadet, Mehmed Resad ve Tiryal Hanim, Medine, Koguslar, Isfendiyarogullari, Halil Han Arda and non-Islamic manuscripts and were classified into their own sections.  Newer books were bought or donated and placed in the New Manuscripts Section and books from the Sultan Ahmed III Library were moved into the new library in 1966.

There are approximately 13,450 manuscripts here in many different languages including Turkish, Persian, Arabic, Greek, Latin, Armenian, Serbian, Hebrew, and Syriac.  There are also sample Ottoman calligraphy works and calligraphic tools such as reed pens, kalemdar, pen drawers, scissor’s, pen knifes (sharpeners), wooden cases for the Koran, lecterns, seals and maps. The library provides copy and print, microfilm, photograph and media services.
The Topkapi Palace (Tel: +90-212-512 0480) opens daily 09:00-17:00 except Saturdays & Sundays.
