Virgin Mary Assyrian Church Istanbul

Virgin Mary Assyrian Church Istanbul
The Virgin Mary or St Mary Assyrian Church or “Surp Asdvadzadzin” is the only church built by Assyrians in Istanbul and is on Karakurum Street in Beyoglu ’s Tarlabasi district. According to sources the site was bought by the Assyrian community in the 19th century and a church existed there between the years of 1650 and 1780. The church was rebuilt on September 6, 1863 and was opened for religious services for both Armenians and Assyrians as a common sanctuary. In 1870 the church was badly damaged by fire and was extensively restored and renovated in 1878.

The old building was demolished and rebuilt by Assyrians and reopened with a special ceremony in 1961.
The stone workmanship is a refined example of the Mardin masons from the south-eastern part of Turkey and particularly shows in the heads of wreathed columns inside the church. This church also has a school and an administrative section.
