Vodina Road Istanbul

Vodina Road Istanbul
There are some houses and shops along this street that have been restored through the UNESCO/EU project and at the end of its east side, where Balat and Fener merge there is a huge walled compound with an old brick building hanging on to one end.

Behind the wall are two churches, although they are barely visible, one is dedicated to St. George and the other to Panagia Paramithas (St. Mary the Comforter).
Michael Cantacuzenus, a Fener nobleman, gave St. George to the Patriarch of Jerusalem in the 17th century and it was used as the family’s private chapel for their mansion which possibly stood behind the walls.  Panagia Paramithas was the seat of the Patriarchate from 1586 to 1596 and was linked to the Cantacuzenuses who were Wallachia governors and became known locally as the Vlach Saray (Vlach Palace). Unfortunately the building was destroyed by fire in 1976.
Vodina Road features in many movies due to its old and authentic feel.
