Yedikule, Belgrat, Silivri and Mevlana Gates

Yedikule, Belgrat, Silivri and Mevlana Gates

Yedikule Gate

The Yedikule Kapi (gate) still in use today with a narrow entry and Byzantine eagle carved into the marble above.

Belgrade Gate

The area between Yedikule and Belgrat Kapi ( Belgrade Gate ) is used as a market and access can be a problem here. Belgrat Kapi was originally a military gate which differed from public gates as it had no bridge crossing over the moat from the outer walls. It was named after Belgrade captives who settled in the area in 1521. Floodlit at night and because of its renovations is one of the best parts of the parapet to walk on.

Silivri Gate

North from here is the Silivri Kapi ( Silivri Gate ) although extensively restored there are areas around it that remain untouched.

Mevlana Gate

Restoration work has also been carried out on the Mevlana Kapi and as this gate was where the walls completion ended there is a Latin inscription here that reads “By the command of Theodosius, Constantine erected these strong fortifications in less than two months. Scarcely could Pallas [Athena] herself have built so strong a citadel in so short a time”.
