Yenikapi Istanbul

Living in Yenikapi and the Economy

At first glance Yenikapı appears to be rather uninteresting, sitting in between the hectic Kennedy Road and a large car showroom but the vast stone-walled
Theodosius (Eleutherius) Harbour built during the reign of Emperor Theodosius (379-395) has an esteemed history. The harbour gradually silted up and by the year 1500 had been abandoned but the neighbourhood went on to make money from market gardening. The harbour has since been restored and the docks are now used by the large sea buses crossing the Sea of Marmara.

Yenikapi Harbour

Yenikapı is home to a huge harbour that has been there since Byzantine times and where many sunken medieval ships have been discovered. The docks today are used by the huge sea buses that run to the  Marmara Islands,  Bursa ,  Yalova and Bandirma .

Yenikapi Underground Station

There is an underground station being built at Yenikapı that will be part of the huge Marmaray Project.

Greeks, Armenians & Turks in Yenikapi

Yenikapı was predominantly a Greek neighbourhood until in 1453 when Sultan Mehmed II resettled many Armenians here. Turkish Muslims then started to move into the neighbourhood constructing mosques and other religious buildings although today the area is better known for its many bars and nightclubs.
