Yildiz Park Pavilions
The park is a lovely place to spend a few hours, there are many shrubs and plants that are labelled to help you recognise them, green parakeets fly and squawk from the trees above and squirrels are foraging everywhere. The better of the two is the Malta Pavilion (Malta Kosku) constructed in the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz and is where Sultan Murad V and his mother were imprisoned after he was deposed in 1876. On the ground floor there was once a wonderful indoor pool with a central fountain decorated with marble fish and swans with matching fountains against the wall and the ladies’ WC retains its original marble washbasin and toilet. Today the pavilion houses a restaurant that has spectacular painted ceilings and offers fantastic views of the Bosphorus.
Malta PavilionIn the grounds there are two very beautiful pavilions that are both the design of the Balyan brothers.
Cadir MansionThe Cadir Mansion (Cadir Köşkü) is next to the lake and is where Sultan Abdulhamid tortured Grand Vizier Mithad Pasa (1822-1884), along with his associates, to prove that they had been involved in the murder of Sultan Abdulaziz. Mithad Pasa was a reformist who became a Grand Vizier twice and battled against the incompetence and inflexibility of the later Ottoman sultans. It was due to foreign intervention that he was not executed and there is a bust of him in front of the Old TC Ziraat Bankası building in Cagaloglu . Today there is a café and restaurant in the pavilion.
