Zal Mahmud Pasa Mosque Istanbul

Zal Mahmud Pasa Mosque Istanbul
Zal Mahmud Pasa Mosque is Eyup’s second most important mosque and its very impressive architectural design was another of the great Mimar Sinan ’s works dating back to the 1570s.  The split level complex has two medreses and includes the tomb of Zal and his wife who both died on the same night in 1580.  Zal, after receiving orders from Suleyman the Magnificent , strangled the sultan’s son Mustafa, and went on to become his Grand Vizier.

Nearby is the 16th century Silahi Mehmed Bey Mescit (Chapel) that has an unusual hexagonal brick and stone minaret with an open sided lantern on the top.
