Zeynep Sultan Mosque Istanbul

Zeynep Sultan Mosque Istanbul

Location

This baroque style mosque stands opposite the tramlines across from Soguk Cesme (Cold Fountain) Gate in Sarayburnu and was built in 1760.

Architecture of the Mosque

It was built for Sultan Ahmed III’s daughter Zeynep by Mehmed Tahir Ağa who had also built the Laleli Mosque. The mosque looks very much like a Byzantine church because of its dome which rises and falls around the arched windows and the alternating layers of brick and stone style of masonry that is reminiscent of 18th century Byzantine architecture.

Other Sites to Visit

At the back of the mosque there is a similar but smaller building that was an Ottoman primary school and is now the office of the Turkish Monuments Association.

Directly opposite the mosque there is a sebil dating back to 1778 that had been attached to Sultan Abdulhamid I’s tomb in Sirkeci but was moved here and now houses the Gülhane Büfe.
