Aliaga Izmir

Aliaga Izmir
Aliaga is located 50km north of Izmir and sits in the heart of ancient Aeolia and although the names are similar they are in no way connected as the town was named after K.oğlu Ali Ağa who is a member of the affluent Karaosmanoğlu Ayan and who owned an estate there.

Ancient Sites

The remains of the ancient city of Myrina is around 15km north of Aliağa’s centre and another important site,
although not yet excavated, is Gryneion which is near to Şakran on the peninsula south of the town centre and also 15km away. The ancient remains of Aigai in Yuntdağı, which are in the province of Manisa , are easily accessed from here as is Izmir using the D550 road between Mugla - Edirne , or the commuter train service run by İZBAN operates 15 daily trains from the Aliağa Railway Station to the Alsancak Terminal in Izmir and the ESHOT Bus No. 740 also runs from there to Izmir.

Economy

Aliağa’s main economy is centred on an oil refinery, a ship-breaking facility and tourism.
