The first museum opened in 1927 in a church in Ayavukla, and after three years a second one was founded in the Izmir Culture Park, and in 1951 larger premises were sought to house the many artefacts being brought from neighbouring ancient cities. The third, newer and more modern museum opened in Bahribaba Park in Konak in 1984 with exhibition halls, laboratories, warehouses, photography rooms, libraries and conference halls, and housed over 1,500 monuments inside the building and the gardens.

The artefacts are exhibited over three floors where you will find relics from Iasos, Candarli (Pitane), Bergama , Bayrakli (formerly Izmir) such as prehistoric earthenware dating from 3,000 BC; ceramics from Protogeometric and Geometric periods, Archaic vases with red and black figures, Hellenistic hydrias; different vessels such as glass vases, bottles, masks and statues. There are gold, silver and precious stone ornaments, bronze Demetre ornaments and coins from Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. On the middle floor which is at the museum’s entrance are large marble statues, portraits and masks dating between Archaic and Roman periods.
