Bergama or Pergamum with its ancient name, is 100 km away from Izmir, and took its name from the hero Pergamos. When it became the capital, palaces, theatre and temples were constructed and the city was surrounded by towers and walls.

History

Bergama was an important town in history and Great Alexander hid his valuable treasures in the Bergama Castle. As well as being an important location in the Middle Ages, it was also crucial for the Ottoman Empire.
Asklepion, Acropolis and Serapis Temple contribute to the cultural heritage of the region.
The famous Zeus Altar in Acropolis was taken to Germany in 1897 and is being exhibited in the Bergama Museum in Berlin.
