European Tourists choose Izmir

European Tourists choose Izmir
European tourists mainly choose to have a holiday in Izmir. Touristic resorts and historical sites are two main factors that drove 1,370,000 tourists last year from 93 different countries. 


Izmir Municipality of Tourism and Culture informed that 850,000 tourists arrived Izmir by plane and 519,000 of them arrived to the city with sea travel. The majority of the tourists were from Germany (360,000), followed by Italy (137,000), France (128,000) and United Kingdom (118,000).

The highest increase in the number of tourists were with sea travel, mainly with cruises. While in 2003, the number of cruises that landed at Alsancak harbour was 5, this number increased to 94 in 2006, 127 in 2009, 141 in 2010,  272 in 2011 and 286 in 2012 (bringing 510,000 foreign tourists to the city).
Izmir benefits from thermal waters, Blue Flag bays and historical sites such as Ephesus and Pergamon that draws tourists to this beautiful city.
