Karsiyaka Izmir

Karsiyaka Izmir
This is the second largest district in Izmir city after Konak in terms of population and has been 99.9% urbanised with high levels of development in terms of lifestyle and services.
Karşıyaka was originally a very small village becoming a suburb of İzmir in the 19th century, and growing larger and stature in the 1960s when its waterfront was developed into a prosperous residential neighbourhood.
It is known to offer the best and highest level of education in  Turkey and is also an active venue for commerce, culture and tourism, and has its own cherished football team Karşıyaka SK which boasts of a large and passionate fan base.

Location

Karşıyaka extends for 12km along the north and east coastline on the tip of the Gulf of Izmir .
Karsiyaka’s centre is 20km north of Izmir’s Konak Square which is on the opposite side of the bay and can be accessed quickly and easily by ferry taking just fifteen minutes and the ferries also run to various other quays located along the Gulf's southern coastline; there is a coastal road but driving takes considerably longer.
Karsiyaka is neighboured by Menemen to the north, Bornova to the east and Cigli to the west.

Places to Visit in Karsiyaka

Karşıyaka is also home to the Latife Uşşaki House who was the wife of Atatürk and the Zübeyde Hanım House belonging to his mother which was restored by the municipality in 2008.
On the eastern side of Karsiyaka are the Alaybey shipyard and the settlement of Soğukkuyu, which was originally a coastal village of semi-nomadic Turkmens (Yörüks) who came in the 19th century, and to the north there is a large forested area.

Transportation

Karşıyaka and İzmir's centres are easily connected using the railways, roads, commuter ferries and the new extension of the underground metro line, and there are also good road links to Menemen and Aliaga to the north which lead to Canakkale in the north-west, and beyond.
